One of the coolest things about living in a mountain town like Telluride is the way we ring in the New Year, with fireworks, torchlight parades of skiers snaking down the mountain, and a huge community gathering at midnight in front of the clock tower on the main street in town.
This new year, the fireworks and the parade won’t be the only thing lighting up: Colorado legalized recreational use of marijuana, and designated retail shops will open their doors to customers on Jan. 1.
In 2014, Telluride will be one of just a few places in Colorado with licensed retailers legally selling pot, as many other communities are still putting local regulations in place to allow—or prohibit—its sale.
Whatever it is that sparks your New Year’s Eve celebration, enjoy, be safe, and have a very happy and prosperous 2014.
